Gardens
The garden is constantly a work in progress – but you are welcome to enjoy its peace and tranquillity, perhaps sitting under the willow tree by the pond… There are various benches and seats dotted around the three acres for your enjoyment and pleasure, and a small walk around the lower garden leads to a bench by the little river that runs alongside the property where we have seen kingfishers and even otters.
On balmy summer evenings or bright sunny mornings the French windows open onto a patio where you can enjoy eating ‘al fresco’ should you wish.
Beyond the main garden is a market garden which Sam is developing from scratch; we have created raised beds where we grow salad veg and recently an asparagus bed which should be fully operational in 2011 (can we wait?!). We built a fruit cage to house the raspberries, currants, blueberries, gooseberries and strawberries which we use in the kitchen for our guests as well as to make jam. This season we are also growing new potatoes, peas, beans (three varieites - runners, broad and french) as well as beetroot, carrots, leeks, jerusalem artichokes, radishes, onions, garlic, shallots, courgettes, squash and sweetcorn.
An orchard of fruit trees has also been planted and these comprise different varieties of apples, pears, plums, cooking apples, quince, damsons, fig and apricot.
We also planted a large flower and shrub border the year of our Civil Partnership (2007) and in the middle of this Sam has made a small flagstone area with a table and two chairs, surrounded by lavender, dafne odora and other scented plants; there are some small solar lights which illuminate areas of the garden at night, when the birdsong by day and quiet by night are amazing.
